چکیده

We study the relationship between the mid-IR (5-18 µm) emission of late-type galaxies and various other star formation tracers in order to investigate the nature of the dust heating sources in this spectral domain. The analysis is carried out using a sample of 123 normal, late-type, nearby galaxies with available data at several frequencies. The mid-IR luminosity (normalized to the H-band luminosity) correlates better with the far-IR luminosity than with more direct tracers of the young stellar population such as the Hα and the UV luminosity. The comparison of resolved images reveals a remarkable similarity in the Hα and mid-IR morphologies, with prominent HII regions at both frequencies. The mid-IR images, however, show in addition a diffuse emission not associated with HII regions nor with the diffuse Hα emission. This evidence indicates that the stellar population responsible for the heating of dust emitting in the mid-IR is similar to that heating big grains emitting in the far-IR, including relatively evolved stars responsible for the non-ionizing radiation. The scatter in the mid-IR vs. Hα, UV and far-IR luminosity relation is mostly due to metallicity effects, with metal-poor objects having a lower mid-IR emission per unit star formation rate than metal-rich galaxies. Our analysis indicates that the mid-IR luminosity is not an optimal star formation tracer in normal, late-type galaxies.

Mid–IR colors and star formation in Virgo and Coma galaxies

We present observations of the global emission of a sample of spiral and irregular galaxies in the Virgo cluster and theComa supercluster. These observations have beenmadewith the camera ISOCAM on board the Infrared Space Observatory, through two broad filters centered respectively at 6.75 and 15.0 μm. The corresponding fluxes are corrected for the stellar contribution in order to obtain the pu...

Radio and Far-infrared Emission as Tracers of Star Formation and Agn in Nearby Cluster Galaxies

We have studied the radio and far-infrared (FIR) emission from 114 galaxies in the 7 nearest clusters (< 100 Mpc) with prominent X-ray emission to investigate the impact of the cluster environment on the star formation and AGN activity in the member galaxies. The X-ray selection criterion is adopted to focus on the most massive and dynamically relaxed clusters. A large majority of cluster galax...

Survey of the ISM in Early - Type Galaxies . IV . The Hot Dust Component ⋆

We present mid-IR photometric properties for a sample of 28 early-type galaxies observed at 6.75, 9.63 and 15 μm with the ISOCAM instrument on board the ISO satellite. We find total mid-IR luminosities in the range 3−48×10 L⊙. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of the galaxies were derived using the mid-IR data together with previously published UV, optical and near-IR data. These SEDs clea...

emission and star formation in late - type galaxies . II A model ⋆

We study the relationship between gas cooling via the [C II] (λ = 158 µm) line emission and dust cooling via the far-IR continuum emission on the global scale of a galaxy in normal (i.e. non-AGN dominated and non-starburst) late-type systems. It is known that the luminosity ratio of total gas and dust cooling, LC II/LFIR , shows a non-linear behaviour with the equivalent width of the Hα (λ = 65...

The Infrared Diameter { Velocity Dispersion Relation for Elliptical Galaxies

Using single channel infrared photometry from the literature, a provisional K-band diameter{velocity dispersion relation for elliptical galaxies in the Coma and Virgo clusters is derived. The Coma cluster relation has 1.5 times lower scatter at K than in B or V. Excluding 4 outliers, the RMS scatter at K for 24 galaxies in Coma is only 4.8% in distance, close to the limit implied by the observa...
